Fuel policy mismatches are one of the most common surprise fees — returning a car with less fuel than agreed, or without a receipt proving a full tank, often triggers a premium refueling charge. Cleaning fees for unusually dirty vehicles and late-return fees for missing your scheduled drop-off window are two more common culprits.

Taking timestamped photos of the vehicle at both pickup and drop-off protects you if a dispute comes up later. Returning with a full tank and on time, with the interior reasonably clean, avoids the vast majority of these fees.
