Some travelers skip getting an IDP, often because they're unaware it's expected or assume their home license will be sufficient everywhere. This can work out fine in many cases, but it introduces a real risk of friction at a rental counter, checkpoint, or in the event of needing to file an insurance claim after an incident.
Given how straightforward obtaining one typically is, most travelers find it's simpler to just have the document ready than to gamble on not needing it.
