A plain-language explanation of what this document is and isn't.
An international driving permit is an officially formatted translation of your existing driver's license into multiple languages, recognized in many countries as a supplement to your home license. It is not a standalone license and doesn't replace the need to hold a valid license from your home country.
The permit exists to help local authorities, rental agencies, and law enforcement abroad quickly understand a license issued in a language or format they're not familiar with, reducing friction at counters and checkpoints.
